Self Defence for TY Students

Guru Liam is available for Transition Year School Classes and Workshops, throughout the School Year, in all areas of Dublin and surrounding counties. Guru Liam has been teaching over 20,000 Transition Year Students since 2001 and it has prove to be a very popular course among the Students. in their TY Year and an addition to their End of Year TY Courses and Workshops Portfolio.

Transitional Year Self Defence Course.


The emphasis of this course is not to teach Students how to fight, but instead to give good practical and realistic training, and advice on what a student can do to protect themselves, if they were to become a victim of crime or violence. This is done firstly by teaching Awareness and Prevention to avoid attacks happening in the first place. Secondly learning How to Escape and learning the Basics of Self Defence.


We also cover the emotional and practical realities of dealing with the aftermath of an attack.


Throughout the class / workshop we offer the students an opportunity for Questions and Answers, so we then can tailor the direction of the course to the needs of the students.


To help deal with the physical aspects, all students will get a Cardio Workout, which is usually a mix of Padwork, Stretching, Self Defence Drills, Breathing Exercises, and Yoga Postures. The degree of cardio workout can be increased or decreased to fit in with the wishes of the class teacher.


This course can be divided into either 4, 6 or 8 weeks or longer programmes if required, or it can through 3 - 4 hour workshops. The course can be worked within the time limitation for each class at each school.


Overview of the Core Subjects Covered.


Self Defence Training. covering the 20 Most Common Attacks - How to reduce. your chances of being a victim from using the internet, ordering a taxi, to what side of the street you walk on, to the clothes you wear, to how to use your mobile etc.... These and other modern day aspects can increase or decrease your chances of being a victim.  Basic Punches, Kicks, and how to escape from common Goals or Locks - How to defend yourself if pushed to the ground, - How to defend against a Knife Attack - Defence against and including how to stop aggressive Sexual Advances and dealing with the aftermath. How to deal with Aggression Situations and Multiple Attackers. Students learn the 6 Step Self Defence Program and what to do after an Attack and get to place of safety.

Warm up Exercises and Stretches / Cardiovascular Exercises using Padwork / Demonstration of Techniques / Student Develop and Learn Technical and Practical Skills in Pairs / Cool Down and Breathing Exercises / Summary and Overview of Class / Workshop / Questions and Answers.


All Students who take part, and fully complete all the training on their Self Defence Course will received Level 1 Self Defence Certification, these Certificates can be presented at the end of the course or given to the TY Teacher / School as become part of the TY End Of Year Portfolio.
